Recreation

The Rochester area offers many enjoyable ways to keep fit, get fresh air and enjoy the beautiful Michigan landscape.  The City of Rochester operates seven municipal parks, the largest of which is the Rochester Municipal Park – site of the annual Art & Apples Festival.  The park features lighted tennis courts, picnic areas, a pond, two separate tot lots, restroom facilities, and a pavilion.  Dinosaur Hills Nature preserve, a private, non-profit environmental education facility in the heart of Rochester, features a library and 16 areas of thickets, meadow, forests, swamps, and streams.

The City of Rochester Hills operates 14 diversified parks covering over 900 acres.  Among them are: Spencer Park, Borden Park, Bloomer Park, The Environmental Education Center, Pine Trace Golf Course, and Veterans Memorial Pointe.

Oakland Township has almost 500 acres of undeveloped parkland, as well as portions of the Bald Mountain Recreation Area and Stony Creek Metro Park.  Summer activities at Stony Creek include swimming, mountain bike trails, fishing, picnicking, golfing, and boating.  Winter activities include ice fishing, skating, sledding, tobogganing, and cross-country skiing.

The Paint Creek Trail, connecting the communities of Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Orion Township and the Village of Lake Orion, offers 8.9 miles of adventures through fields, woodlands, prairies, and marshes.  The trail is used year-round by walkers, joggers, hikers, bicyclists, equestrians, and cross-country skiers.

The Clinton River Trail roughly parallels and frequently crosses the Clinton River and travels nearly 16 miles through Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Pontiac, and Sylvan Lake.  The 4.5-mile portion of the trail running through Rochester Hills bisects the city from the southwest to the northeast along a former railroad right-of-way.  The habitat along this portion of the trail is unique in its diversity and creates many opportunities to view and enjoy a host of wildlife species.
